Buying Guide For Your New Mattress
It’s something we all go through. We wake up in the morning and that old mattress we’ve been laying on for “who knows how many years” makes us feel 10 years older than we really are. Your back aches, you feel like you’ve been asleep for 8 minutes instead of 8 hours. Face it, it’s time for a new mattress.
But how? With all the choices and different styles and features, how can anyone make a intelligent decision of where or how to buy a mattress in Alamance County?
The answer is not all that complicated. In the next few paragraphs we’re going to try to make sense of what you need to know to make a good decision for your new mattress.
First, lets examine the different types of mattresses. When we discuss mattress types we are really talking about what type of support it has. There are basically 3 different types. The first is the time honored innerspring mattress. Most of us grew up on one of these. Then there are the Memory Foam mattresses. These mattresses conform to your body to provide balanced support. Last are a relatively new type which is a Memory Foam Hybrid. This is a combination of Innerspring and Memory Foam. These combine the support of the innerspring with the comfort of Memory Foam.
Lets dig a little deeper into each type. The traditional Innerspring mattresses come in different grades. This is usually designated by the number of coils in the mattress. Serta, for example, offers a variety of Innerspring mattresses systems. Each model will give the number of coils and generally speaking the more coils the higher the quality mattress.
Memory Foam started quite a few years ago. Through the years technology has advanced and produced a mattress that feels like you’re laying on a cloud. The first Memory Foam mattresses were too hot according to many people (myself included). The new I-Comfort mattresses from Serta are infused with a “cooling gel” that regulates your body temperature. These mattresses will conform to your body and provide support where needed.
The Memory Foam Hybrid is a marriage between the traditional innerspring and Memory Foam. It combines the support of the innerspring with the contour fitting comfort of the Memory Foam.
You’re thinking- OK that’s great! But I still don’t know which one is for me!
First, there is no substitute for laying down on the mattress, period. You cannot push down on it with your fingers or sit down on the edge and have any idea of how it will feel night after night. Keep in mind that we spend about 1/3 of our life asleep. Take a few minutes and lay down on several different types. Start with a firm texture and work around to a plush. See which one feels better to you. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and preferably try to shop for a mattress in the morning. Your body is rested and you can make a better judgment of what feels comfortable to you. If you shop in the evening after you’ve been working all day most anything will feel good.
